Vowel reduction

Target audience: intermediate learners.

In [[ stress ]] systems, unstressed vowels often become [ə] or delete altogether.

Example

  • Latin manica [ˈma.ni.ka] => Old French manche [ˈman.tʃə] => Mod. French manche [mɑ̃ʃ] ‘sleeve’
